The top two seeds Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer cruised through their first round matches today at Roland Garros. Nadal was tested slightly by Marcos Daniel winning the first two sets closely, but he stilled managed to prevail in straight sets. Federer cruised by the everlasting Alberto Martin.
Tomas Berdych was the only seed to lose today. He was pinned up in a tough first round match against Simone Bolleli. Andy Roddick, who has a dream draw, won his first round easily.
In the women's draw Dinara Safina cruised through her first round over Anne Keothavong. Safina is looking to hold onto her top ranking, and win her first Grand Slam title, given her recent form she will have a great opportunity.
Maria Sharapova won her first match over Anastasiya Yakimova in three sets. This should be a fun and challenging time for Sharapova in her career, as she will get to climb the rankings once again as she wins matches. Expect her to crack the top 100 quickly.
Interesting first round match tomorrow between Karolina Sprem and Jelena Dokic. Dokic has struggled since her run in Australia and Sprem has shown some impressive for recently.
No other major stories today. Tomorrow the first round will be complete.

All Time Great: Steffi Graf
I'm going to start a weekly All Time Great Series. Each Sunday I will do a write up on an All Time Great Player.
The First all-time great I am writing about is Steffi Graf.
Graf's credentials:
107 Career Singles Titles
22 Singles Grand Slams
1988 Golden Slam Champion
Steffi had a killer forehand, and incredible foot speed. Her ability to strike ball better than most of the other players, and her unparalleled athletic ability led her to achieve more than any other female tennis player in history. Even though she doesn't hold the most Grand Slam titles out of female tennis players, that title belonging to Margaret Court with 24, Graf is certainly achieved the most on all surfaces winning at least four of each Grand Slam.
Steffi's biggest downfall-In the early 1990s Graf won only a couple Wimbledon titles while Monica Seles dominated the tour. If Seles had never been injured she may have won many of the Slams that Steffi won in 1993-1996 where a period where Steffi won 10 slam titles.

Nadal Wins Rome; Kuznetsova and Medina Garrigues Win
Rafael Nadal is a titlist for the third time in three weeks. Of course, Nadal was the heavy favorite heading into the Rome tournament, but I certainly had doubts. Last year Nadal fell in his first match in Rome to Juan Carlos Ferrero. This loss was mainly due to the wear and tear from playing two straight weeks prior to the tournament, just like he did this year. This year turned out to be different, however, Nadal won the event without losing a set, and claims his fifth title of 2009.
Nadal has had such a strong to 2009 that if he were to stop the year right now he would finish ranked 5 in the world handily. Obviously he still has Roland Garros coming up, where he has never lost a single match, and Wimbledon where he will be co-favorite with Roger Federer. Nadal may also play in Madrid, but he has stated concern about the high altitude.
On the women's side Svetlana Kuznetsova won in Stuttgart, and Anabel Medina Garrigues won in Fez. Kuznetsova, who should be nicknamed the "invisible player", won her 10th career title, while Medina Garrigues won her incredible 9th career title.
Kuznetsova is the "invisible player" because she really is hardly noticed, but consistently ranked in the top 10, and spent a lot of time towards the top. Medina Garrigues has won a lot of lower tier tournaments in her career, but 9 is certainly a very respectable number.
